Meet Dennis and Dianna

Meet our latest Peace of Mind recipients, Dennis & Dianna Doerksen! Dennis and Dianna have been happily married for over 34 years and have lived in their Renton home together for the last 18 years. Diana was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, which have progressed over the last several years. Dennis is his wife's sole, full-time caregiver, providing all of her hygiene needs, managing her appointments, medications, and any other needs she may have. Dennis continues to work and selflessly care for his wife while battling his own health issues and trying to maintain their home amidst its desperately needed repairs. Their roof is failing and leaking in several places, which presents health risks for both Dennis and Dianna. Nearly half the neighborhood nominated Dennis and Dianna after seeing their need and taking action together. "I think this would really lift the spirit of not only Dennis and Diana but the whole neighborhood." We look forward to getting started and bringing some much deserved comfort and relief to both Dennis and Dianna.

Our entire team has been working hard to give back Dennis and Dianna their peace of mind. Our project began by removing the old roofing material down to the trusses. We then installed half-inch plywood. This will provide the new shingles a secure roof deck to fasten to. With the new plywood in place, our roofing crew installed an ice and water shield around vulnerable roof penetrations, like the chimney, before moving on to the underlayment installation.

Our Peace of Mind projects often include more than new roofs. So, when we learned that Dennis and Dianna depend on wood to heat their home, we wanted to find a way to make it more comfortable year-round. Our team removed the old, ineffective attic insulation for the couple and installed new Owens Corning attic insulation. We brought Dennis and Dianna's attic up to code, ensuring their space is more energy efficient. Keeping them more comfortable and less dependent on their wood stove to stay warm!

Check out our story for before, during, and after photos. What a difference new attic insulation can make- and stay tuned as our team continues installing the Doerksen's new roofing system!

While our insulation technicians updated the attic space to provide Dennis and Dianna a more comfortable home, our professional roofing crew worked hard installing new Owens Corning Duration shingles. These gorgeous shingles are durable and low maintenance. They carry an impressive wind warranty and are rated top of their class by consumer reports. When it comes to protection, these shingles are second to none!

The couple also has a patio cover in the backyard. They were unable to use this space when it rained because of leaking. The roofing crew installed a new single-ply membrane on the patio cover. Ensuring the roof and back patio cover will be leak free for years.

As part of the project, our crew also installed a new roof on the shed in the backyard.

Our mission is to serve and care for our neighbors. It always inspires us to see neighbors caring for neighbors. Like we saw when an entire neighborhood banded together to get Dennis and Dianna a new roof and more.

Like many other projects, our team found ways to help eliminate a heavy burden from this couple's life. Our community program provided this deserving couple with the comfort and protection they needed to reclaim their peace of mind.

Shout out to all who helped make this project possible. And a special thank you to Dennis and Dianna for opening your home and life up to our team at Valentine Roofing!
