Free Roof for Veterans

Bringing Peace of Mind to Veterans

Valentine Roofing appreciates the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. That is why in October we decided to offer our last peace of mind project for the year to a local veteran in need of a new roof. We received hundreds of nominations throughout Puget Sound for many deserving members of our community.

It was difficult to decide on just one veteran with so many in need of a new roof. So, with the help of our generous partners, we were able to provide two veterans with a new roof completely free of charge. One veteran just beginning his journey back into civilian life. The other has dedicated his journey to helping other veterans along the way.

Meet Mitchell, USMC Veteran

Mitchell's family knew he was destined for service at a young age. He delighted in learning and recounting history, especially aviation history. His favorite pastime was to be his family's personal tour guide at the local Museum of Flight. So it came as no surprise when he left college to pursue a career as a helicopter mechanic in the military.

In the Marine Corps Mitchell excelled as a mechanic catching the eye of his superiors. His dedication and steady demeanor earned him a job as a crew chief in addition to his mechanic duties.

Upon leaving the service Mitchell decided to settle back in the Puget Sound area. Finding a home in Lakewood. He invested his hard-earned savings into numerous necessary improvements to create a comfortable home. Unfortunately, after using all his savings he is unable to afford the new roof his home needs.

Mitchell's Project Specs

LOCATION: Lakewood, WA

ROOF TYPE: Composite roof

ROOF PITCH: 5/12

SHINGLE TYPE: Owens Corning Duration Designer®

SHINGLE COLOR: Black Sable

GUTTER TYPE: 5K Aluminum

GUTTER COLOR: White

PROJECT NOTES: Mitchell's attic was under-insulated so our crew provided new blown-in insulation to get his attic up to DOE recommendations. The old three-tab shingles were removed before the new roofing system could be installed. Once on-site, it became clear that his roof was also in need of new gutters.

Meet Jim, USMC Vietnam Veteran

Jim is a proud USMC Vietnam veteran rated 100% disabled by the VA (associated with several service-related health issues). After his service, he continued to support the veteran community. Jim felt compelled to serve the community that provided him with brotherhood and support for his own rough transition back into civilian life after his time in the service.

He began by working with the Marine Corps League and then moved on to the American Legion post 161. He currently supports veterans through his position as commander of the VFW post-2995. After years of serving his community, Jim finds that he is now in need of support again, in the form of a new roof!

SHINGLE TYPE: Owens Corning Duration®

SHINGLE COLOR: Estate Gray

PROJECT NOTES: Jim's cedar roof was installed over skip sheeting. So the crew began by installing a new CDX plywood roof deck. Jim's old gutters were pulling away from the fascia so the crew also installed a new gutter system once the roof was complete.

After

Our amazing crews were able to complete both Jim’s new Estate Gray roof in Redmond as well as Mitchell’s new Black Sable roof in Lakewood before the Veteran's Day holiday. We were honored to have an opportunity to give back to the veteran community. A community that has sacrificed for our freedoms, our liberty, and our safety. Thank you to all our veterans, and a special thank you to Mitchell and Jim.
